Kauai is also known as the "Garden Isle" for its lush vegetation and spectacular waterfalls. It is the oldest of the Hawaiian island chain and is approximately 553 square miles in size.

The Hawaiian Romantic Cottage is located on the North Shore of Kauai, just outside the town of Kilauea. The property adjoins the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and Kahili (“Rock Quarry”) Beach.

Hiking trails through the refuge area and to the beach are accessible right from the cottage.

Kahili “Rock Quarry” Beach was named after a plantation-era quarry which has long since disappeared, leaving behind a pristine lagoon and beach area. Local surfers and fishermen frequent this quiet beach, which is often almost deserted.

Kilauea Point is located on the northernmost tip of the islands and is one of the few Hawaiian refuges open to the public. It offers breathtaking views and hikes overlooking the Pacific, and it is one of the most popular spots for visitors and residents of Hawaii alike, with an average of 300,000 visitors a year!

Migratory birds such as the Pacific golden plover, seabirds such as the Laysan albatross, and Hawai`i's State Bird (the nene) are some of the wildlife that use this refuge. Humpback whales, Hawaiian monk seals, and spinner dolphins can also be observed here.

Please use caution at all times on all beaches. Many beaches do not have a lifeguard. Enter the water at your own risk and never turn your back on the ocean. The surf on the North Shore can be extremely rough in the fall and winter months. The undertow can be very strong at all times.
